“The art of healing comes from nature,
not from the physician. Therefore the physician
must start from nature,
with an open mind.” - Philipus Aureolus Paracelsus

"I
call my approach to therapy Self-Empowerment Counseling—counseling
that puts you in control over your own life. Through our work
together, instead of fearing struggles and conflicts you’ll learn
to use them as incredible opportunities for personal growth and often much
needed transition."
- Stress, Anxiety & Depression – Together
we’ll identify patterns that cause you the most pain and difficulty
in your life, discover where they came from, and set new patterns that
serve you better.
- Life-Transitions – Marriage, birth, mid-life,
moving, education, career…these are just a few of the transitions
we make throughout life. Changes, even positive ones, create stress.
You’ll learn techniques that keep you in control during these events.
- Communication – Often, we habitually engage
in old patterns of communication. You’ll discover new and more
effective ways to communicate.
- Self-esteem – At times re-examination of the
past will free you in your present life and help you make real progress.
You’ll strengthen your self-concept and sharpen your decision-making
skills.
- Trauma/PTSD – Traumatic events from our past
can affect our ability to function in the present. These events can often
trigger in the present a reaction from “ourselves in the past.” Examining
and changing your perception of the past can free you from experiencing
a negative emotional charge.
- Relationships/Intimacy – Learn to love yourself,
your friends, and family more fully and to allow their love to restore
and enrich you. Since we don’t live in a vacuum, often times a
significant other will be invited to our sessions.

"Most of us, swimming against the tides of
trouble the world knows nothing about,
need only a bit of praise or encouragement - and we will make the goal."
- Jerome P. Fleishman
In addition to my one-on-one work with clients, I very much enjoy working
within a group dynamic. Below is a list of the group sessions I frequently
conduct. Please contact me to learn which group sessions are currently
available.
This group is based on the research and practice of Belleruth Naparstek
(Health Journeys.com) and John Kabat-Zinn (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction).
Participants will learn:
- How to cultivate emotional balance, through meditation and training
in emotional-regulation strategies.
- Useful techniques for bringing mindfulness into everyday activities.
- How to deal with urges, cravings, and addictions by remaining open
and curious to subtle discomfort in the body and mind.
- New strategies to counteract destructive thought patterns and negative
emotions.
- How to handle emotions during stressful situations with greater skill
and consideration. First, by manifesting greater emotional awareness
and intelligence in dealing with their own destructive thoughts and emotions.
Followed by learning greater empathy and compassion in response to the
suffering of others.
- Enhanced skills in resolving emotional conflicts, stress reduction
and immune strengthening.
This group follows a Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Program designed
specifically for women, addressing several core elements concerning the
experience of trauma and the healing process.
The Program includes:
- Understanding – Trauma betrays a child's
basic assumptions about herself, her family, and her world. The abuse
alters fundamental connections to oneself, family, community, and spirit.
The experience of abuse and the responses of others to that abuse can
serve to invalidate one's judgments, perceptions, sense of reality and
self-worth.
- Developing a Ritual – This is done by working
within a trauma framework that understands women and their symptoms in
the context of their life experiences, culture, and society. It is respectful
of the individual's situation and functioning.
- Cultivating Empowerment Through Self-Awareness – This
is an essential element that is achieved by promoting self-actualization,
strengthening a sense of self, and supporting women in developing the
capacity to trust in their own decision-making ability.
- A Collaborative Relationship – This is characterized
by working together in a cooperative and supportive a sense—with
both therapist and individuals having a voice and position of power.
Participants will discover the benefits of developing interpersonal connections
that promote a sense of safety, trust and ultimately healing.
This group is designed for individuals interested in learning and practicing
NLP skills in their application to therapy and healing. NLP is a brief,
solution-focused approach with a practical application to solving everyday
problems.
Many components of human problems are learned quite early in life, in
a way that is completely outside of our awareness. NLP engages therapeutic
modeling to help people understand problem patterns, the context in which
behaviors were created and the purpose they served at the time of their
creation. Once this structure is revealed, individuals can begin to understand
their problems and what needs to happen to overcome unwanted behaviors.
“Maria Connolly is a gifted therapist who brings
heart, soul, and solutions to her clients. She is perceptive, clear, and
particularly adept at utilizing the powerful patterns of Neuro-Linguistics
(NLP) to help her clients overcome limitations of any kind. For people
who want someone they can trust to help them make positive changes in their
life, I suggest they call Maria.”
